MPEG-G: Transport and Storage of Genomic Information
Standard: MPEG-G
Part: 1
File format for compressed genomic information
Editions
Edition - 1: Transport and Storage of Genomic Information
Publication Year: 0
Status: released
Motivations: genomic information as everyday practice in several fields, but the growing volume of data generated becomes a serious obstacle for a wide diffusion. The lack of an appropriate representation and efficient compression of genomic data is widely recognized as a critical element limiting its application potential. ISO/TC 276 and MPEG have combined their respective expertise and missions to develop a compression standard capable of providing new effective solutions for genomic information processing applications.
Objectives: Transport and storage of genomic sequencing data and associated metadata with the capability of accessing these data sets efficiently, e.g. selective fast browsing, searching and access capabilities directly in compressed form.
Edition - 2: Transport and Storage of Genomic Information
Publication Year: 0
Status: released
Motivations: Fix editorial errors in the first edition
Objectives: Create a second edition of the standard.
Edition - 3: Support for Part 6
Publication Year: 0
Status: ongoing
Motivations: Extend the file format specification to support Part 6 Genomic Annotations content
Objectives: Include new data structures to accommodate annotation data and associated metadata
