The DVD Forum was held at the Westin Santa Clara hotel in Santa Clara, California April 10 and 11, 1996. A booklet featuring slides from the presentations was distributed to each attendee. The Forum was hosted by the principal DVD Consortium members: Matsushita, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Sony, Thomson, Time Warner, Toshiba, and JVC.

The day was broken into a morning General Session, which consisted of overviews of various DVD aspects, and afternoon parallel breakout sessions for Hardware/Component, Media Software, and Physical topics. The general session started with overviews of the DVD books and ended with two panel sessions. The first panel brought together Hollywood studio executives who were leaders of their home video departments, followed by the second panel of game developers.

Most of the approximately 500 audience members came from the hardware sector (semiconductor, board vendors, etc.) rather than the software sector (game producers,studios, post-production houses).

A two-day briefing was held two months later in San Jose.
